Demonstration is held against a grand jury decision in Ferguson, Missouri.
November 26, 2014
Some 1,500 people march from Dudley Square to downtown Boston to protest a grand jury’s decision not to indict a white police officer for the fatal shooting of black teenager in Ferguson, Missouri. It is one of a number of protests in cities throughout the country on this day, but unlike some of the others remains mostly peaceful. William Gross, the first black Superintendent in Chief of the Boston Police Department, notes, “I’m very proud of the young people here. I’m the chief of police. I wholeheartedly support their right to protest, their First Amendment rights. Imagine, from South Bay to here, and there are no cars burning, no businesses looted. This is great.” Subsequent demonstrations are held in Boston over the next week.
